English (US)   District Crime Holding With Recent Lows  -  Categories: Police Department, Neighborhoods  -  @ 01:54:47 pm

Reported crime across the district was almost the lowest in six months, one incident short of tying the low in March. Much of the drop paralleled the drop in vehicle burglaries.

The dark cloud on the report was the highest number of home burglaries we've seen in six months, at ten. The break-ins were spread across numerous neighborhoods. It is important to ensure our homes are secure and to help preserve our neighbors' safety, too, by keeping watch for any suspicious activities.

The non-residential burglaries that occurred were still in residential areas. At least one was a house under construction, which has become an all-too-common occurence. Such thefts are often for copper and other materials that can be recycled for cash and are a concern across the Metroplex and state.

Many Metroplex cities are looking at stronger ordinances to reduce the ability for such thieves to sell their spoils. The Public Safety Committee, which is currently Council member Rick Williams and I, and staff members, with input from local recyclers, have been working to draft an ordinance to help address the problems and to build a united front among Metroplex communities. We will present the draft ordinance to the Council at its next work session. The committee will also suggest that the Council advocate that stronger controls at the state level during the next Legislative session.

As noted in the previous post and others, a computer glitch has underreported our crime statistics to the state and FBI. Those statistics that we forward were produced by a computer data sweep on the Police Department's database of total crimes. The numbers reported here and previously come from the total data and are not affected by the glitch.

Be safety conscious at all times. Report incidents to the police immediately. Report suspicious activities or persons. The non-emergency number is (972) 485-4840. Let's work to keep our families and neighbors safe!
