Garland, Texas - A Community Profile

Founded in 1891, Garland has grown to a community of approximately 222,432 residents, making it the second largest city in Dallas County, the tenth largest in the state of Texas, and among the 100 largest in the United States. Garland encompasses 57 square miles strategically located in the northeastern portion of the Dallas/Fort Worth metroplex. The city is best known for its safe, affordable, family environment, as well as its strong industrial base.

Garland Library SystemGarland citizens enjoy numerous amenities including 68 parks; several softball, soccer and swim centers; and a nationally renowned golf course. Downtown Garland offers residents and visitors a quaint hometown environment for shopping and dining, as well as evening entertainment. Downtown is also the home of the Granville Arts Center and Plaza Theater, which host numerous cultural activities throughout the year, and the Nicholson Memorial Library, the main branch of the City’s library system.

While over 100 years old, Garland continues to be a progressive and growing community. Of Garland's 57 square miles of land area, approximately 90% has been developed. The City has made significant efforts to ensure that high quality development continues through 2012, when Garland is expected to reach build-out. Included in this development is the new Firewheel Town Center, a premier shopping destination, and other retail and office development along the S.H. I90 corridor.
